“The History Of The Freshman”
“A follow-up to the Fight Club scene. I decided to keep Grady’s voice audible on this one, since his existence is a bit murkier than TD’s in Fight Club. That and I really love Philip Stone’s voice and would have hated to lose it. I also avoided cutting to his close-up so as not to have shots of ‘nothing’ interspersed.”
“Lemmy Caution (Eddie Constantine) is on a mission to eliminate Professor Von Braun, the creator of a malevolent computer that rules the city of Alphaville. Befriended by the scientist’s beautiful daughter Natasha (Anna Karina), Lemmy must unravel the mysteries of the strictly logical Alpha 60 and teach Natasha the meaning of the word ‘love.’”
Check out Criterion’s Three Reasons for Michael Mann’s Thief
“Finding hypnotic beauty in neon and rain-slick streets, sparks and steel, Thief effortlessly established the moody stylishness and tactile approach to action that would also define such later iconic entertainments from Mann as Miami Vice, Manhunter, and Heat.”
Check out Béatrice Coron’s TED Talk from 2011.
“With scissors and paper, artist Béatrice Coron creates intricate worlds, cities and countries, heavens and hells. Striding onstage in a glorious cape cut from Tyvek, she describes her creative process and the way her stories develop from snips and slices.”
Three years ago today, the Criterion Collection released their very first “Three Reasons” video.
This Three Reasons video for The Sweet Smell Of Success remains one of my favorites (probably because I went to New York right around the time I watched this), but it’s amazing to see how these videos have evolved over the past three years. I’m so glad they’ve kept this series going.
